Cotton (100%) vs Bamboo

Both cotton and bamboo are low-loft battings that produce flat, drapey quilts. Bamboo has a slightly silkier feel that makes the finished quilt feel more fluid, while cotton has a more structured hand. The visual loft difference is minimal — both will give you a thin, traditional-looking quilt.

Cotton provides slightly more warmth than bamboo. Bamboo excels at breathability and moisture-wicking, making it feel cool against the skin. For warm-climate quilters or summer bed quilts, bamboo's cooling properties are a genuine advantage. For year-round quilts, cotton's moderate warmth is more versatile.

Cotton shrinks 3-5%, producing pronounced crinkle. Bamboo shrinks 2-3%, with a softer, less dramatic texture change. Both shrink enough to create some texture, but cotton's crinkle is more visible and traditional-looking. If you specifically want the crinkled look, cotton delivers it more reliably.

Bamboo batting typically costs 20-40% more than comparable cotton batting. The premium reflects both the newer technology and the sustainability angle. For quilters who value eco-friendliness, the extra cost may feel justified. For pure value, cotton remains the better deal.
