Also known as: Ohio Star, Variable Star, Shoofly Variation, Eastern Star, Tippecanoe
A classic star formed by quarter-square triangles radiating from a center square.
Accurate quarter-square triangle units are the key to a sharp Ohio Star. To make a QST unit: layer two contrasting squares right sides together, draw a diagonal line, and sew a quarter inch on each side. Cut apart to yield two half-square triangles. Then pair two HSTs with opposing fabrics, draw a diagonal line perpendicular to the existing seam, sew and cut to produce two finished QSTs. Trim each to the exact unfinished size. Assemble the block in three rows of three, pressing seams toward the plain squares.
