Our top recommendation: Polyester (low-loft)
Wall hangings have unique batting requirements because they hang vertically rather than lying flat on a bed. The ideal batting should maintain its shape without sagging, resist gravity-induced stretching, and produce a smooth, flat surface that shows off the quilt design. Since wall hangings are rarely washed, washability is less important than dimensional stability.
Wall quilts must hang straight and square. Batting that shrinks or stretches will cause the quilt to distort. Polyester's zero shrinkage makes it ideal.
Heavy batting can cause a wall quilt to sag at the bottom. Lightweight polyester or silk batting keeps the quilt light and easy to hang.
Low-loft batting produces a flat surface that shows off the design without adding bulk. High loft can cause shadows and an uneven appearance on the wall.
A small amount of stiffness helps a wall hanging maintain its shape. Fusible batting (like Warm Company's Steam-A-Seam batting) bonds to the fabric for extra stability.
Zero shrinkage, lightweight, and holds its shape on the wall without sagging or distortion.
