Layer Cakes

Layer cakes are pre-cut 10-inch squares, typically containing 42 pieces from a single fabric collection. These generous squares are the largest standard pre-cut square format and give quilters substantial fabric to work with per piece.

The 10-inch size is particularly powerful because it can be sub-cut into so many useful shapes: four 5-inch charm squares, four quarter-square triangles, sixteen 2.5-inch squares, or various rectangular combinations. A single layer cake can yield enough pieces for a generously sized throw quilt.

Layer cakes shine in patterns where you want large-scale fabric prints to remain visible. Unlike smaller pre-cuts that crop a print heavily, the 10-inch square lets the fabric design speak for itself. This makes them especially popular with quilters who gravitate toward modern, minimalist layouts with fewer seams.
